About Us

LANGUAGE:

mYANMAR IS aSIA’S SECOND POOREST ECONOMY. BUT IT IS CURRENTLY Emerging FROM A LONG PERIOD OF ISOLATION. Its people are rich in diversity, talent and HOPE AND WE ARE WORKING CLOSELY WITH THEM TO HELP UNLOCK ECONOMIC POTENTIAL; TRANsFORMING COMMUNITIES, EMPOWERING FAMILIES.

We have been offering microfinance and other financial services to poor people in Myanmar since 1998. Through our work, we help small business owners create or develop businesses with affordable credit.

Owning a small business provides financial security to a family and has the potential to transform lives. It enables families to increase their household incomes and to improve their quality of life. As a result, the children of our borrowers enjoy better health, nutrition and education.

We have service centres in remote rural areas. We also work in two of the country’s primary economic hubs; Yangon and Mandalay. Clients also contribute funds to finance for local projects including constructing schools, building roads and supporting healthcare. As loans are paid back, others in the community can benefit from further loans.

History

Our MFI has been supporting clients since 1998. Since then, we have grown to serve 50,500 active borrowers and impact 132,300 children and 60,100 jobs.

World Vision originally began its microfinance and savings programme in 1993, but quickly realised the global need for microfinance and the immense role it played in reducing poverty. VisionFund International was then founded in 2003 to manage its network of affiliated microfinance organisations (MFIs).

Since then, VisionFund International has been lending money to people in need of financial services, helping them to start or grow sustainable businesses. Our clients use the income earned to build a better future for their children, for example, through having clean water, nutritious food, education and healthcare.

Working in Myanmar

Over 52 million people live in Myanmar. Most of its population is involved in agriculture related work. It shares its borders with five countries and is in the early stages of integrating itself into the global economy.

The United Nations estimates that the microfinance industry in Myanmar is currently meeting only 10% of those who could benefit from it. Analysts estimate a further four million people need affordable credit to create their own stable income.

We are the second largest microfinance provider in Myanmar, and one of the few recognised and licensed Microfinance institutions endeavouring to fill to the credit gap. As a result, we have doubled our loan portfolio over 12 months. Despite this growth, we still need to expand out services to meet the needs of the working poor and families.
